It’s used to help retain lubricant and keep contaminants out of a rotating or sliding assembly on Scotchman equipment. A properly fitted oil seal helps reduce leaks, heat, and premature wear. If you’re servicing Scotchman parts where fluid seepage is present, replacing the seal is a common first step.
Match the part number from the machine manual or the old seal packaging when possible. If the number is unreadable, verify key dimensions (inside diameter, outside diameter, and thickness) and compare them to the removed seal. For best results, also confirm the seal type and lip orientation so the oil seal faces the lubricant side during installation.
In many cases, yes, using a seal driver or a flat plate that contacts the outer shell evenly to avoid distortion. Lightly lubricate the sealing lip, keep the bore clean, and press it in square without hammering directly on the seal. If the shaft has a sharp edge or keyway, use a protective sleeve or tape to prevent cutting the lip during assembly.
